Childbirth Education
Our Family Birth Center offers a series of classes every month for parents-to-be. Classes are conveniently offered on weeknights and weekends. We also offer a Childbirth Refresher Program, Teen Childbirth Program, Sibling Program, Grandparents Program and Breastfeeding Classes. Lactation counseling and breast pump rental are available 24hours. Childbirth Education ClassesThe birth of a new baby is a wondrous event in the lives of parents.It's also a time when parents-to-be are full of questions. The Childbirth Education Program at Wilson Memorial Hospital helps answer questions about the birthing process and lets new parents know what options are available to make the birth of their child the best it can be.
Topics covered include: - Nutrition and weight gain
- Risk factors for pre-term labor
- What to expect when you arrive at the hospital
- The four stages of labor
- Pain management and comfort measures
- Reasons for a C-section
- Caring for your infant
- How to select a pediatrician
- Car seat safety
Classes are offered as either weekend classes or five evening weekly classes. All classes are held in the Wilson Medical Building lower level education room. A tour of Wilson's Family Birth Center is included during the classes.
The cost is $60 for those delivering at the Family Birth Center and includes all materials. For those delivering elsewhere the charge is $70. Weekly Childbirth ClassClasses are held on Thursdays from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. - Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

Refresher Childbirth ClassesClasses are offered for those parents who have been through the Childbirth Education classes with a previous pregnancy. The highlights of labor and birth are discussed. Relaxation and coping techniques are addressed. The classes are held in the Wilson Medical Building lower level conference room. Breastfeeding Success ClassClasses will discuss benefits of breastfeeding, positioning,latch-on and problem solving techniques. The classes will be conducted by a certified lactation counselor at Wilson Memorial Hospital. Breastfeeding Support GroupThis group meets once a month to provide mothers a supportive environment to discuss their breastfeeding experience, ask questions,share ideas and express concerns. Mothers are given the needed support network to continue their breastfeeding journey. There is no fee for the support group. 2008 Schedule Classes will be held on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Teenage Childbirth ClassesThese classes are designed to meet the special need and address questions of teenage parents. Mothers are encouraged to bring a coach with them to share in the childbirth classroom experience. For further information, contact your high school guidance counselor. Students will be referred to the GRADS (Graduation, Reality And Dual-role Skills) Program through the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School. Classes are held on an "as needed" basis at area high schools.
Grandparents ProgramA new grandchild, a little bundle of joy that takes you back to the day your own child was born. How many years ago was that? How has care for infants changed? Our Grandparents Class focuses on how the world of childcare has evolved over the years, including: - New safety guidelines for car seats and cribs
- Current parenting advice on feeding, sleeping, crying and soothing infants
- Age-appropriate toys
- How to be a supportive and involved grandparent

Sibling ProgramClasses are offered for soon-to-be brothers and sisters. The classis designed for 3-10 year olds. Where babies come from, the changes the baby will bring to the home, and how to help with the new baby are some of the topics discussed. Sibling classes meet at Wilson Memorial Hospital.
