Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding

A mother's decision on how to feed her baby is hers alone and a decision we will fully respect and support. As health care experts, however, we know the inherent benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child. Breast milk is the perfect food for babies and helps to protect them from illness and disease. Breastfeeding is good for moms as well. Since breastfeeding burns calories, it can help her lose the baby weight more quickly than if she was not breastfeeding. Studies have also shown that women who breastfeed have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Babies were born to be breastfed, but sometimes moms have questions or concerns. To help with these questions, we've developed a comprehensive program available at Wilson Memorial Hospital. Our Lactation Counselor is here to give guidance and support to mothers who choose to breastfeed.

Education

Wilson Memorial Hospital offers Breastfeeding Classes and a Breastfeeding Support Group for mothers who plan to breastfed and for those who are considering this option. Both of these groups are facilitated by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

Follow-Up Support

With your consent the lactation consultant will provide breastfeeding follow-up once you are home via follow-up phone calls. Our Lactation Counselor typically calls mothers at two weeks, six weeks, and three months, to see if there are any concerns or issues with breastfeeding. This service is provided at no cost.

Help Line

If you have any questions or concerns about breastfeeding or using a breast pump, our Lactation Counselor is just a phone call away. Call (937) 498-5434 to speak with her directly. The Lactation Counselor works three days a week; if she is not available at the time of your call, leave a message and she will promptly return your call.
